From Candlelight to Solar Bright: Transforming Lives at Likoni Orphanage

Imagine trying to do your homework in the flickering light of a candle, knowing that one wrong move could start a fire. This was the daily reality for the children at Likoni Orphanage—until now.
A Need That Couldn't Wait
When our Project Coordinator, Zanet Amalembe, conducted an assessment at Likoni Orphanage, she discovered something that broke her heart: children were using dangerous candles to study after dark whenever electricity failed. The risk of burns, fires, and smoke inhalation was constant. Many children simply went to bed when darkness fell, unable to complete their homework or read a book.
“We knew we had to act immediately,” Zanet reported. “Education is their pathway out of poverty, but how can they learn when they can’t even see their books safely?”
Dignity Matters
Thanks to your support, we donated solar lamps to every child at the orphanage. These simple yet powerful devices have changed everything:
- Children can now complete their homework safely, even during power outages
- No more dangerous open flames threatening young lives
- Sustainable, cost-free lighting that will serve them for years
- Independence to study on their own schedule, building confidence and academic success
One young girl told Zanet with tears in her eyes, “Now I can read my books at night without being afraid. I want to be a teacher someday.”
Nourishing Growing Bodies and Dreams
But light alone isn’t enough. Children need proper nutrition to focus, learn, and grow. That’s why we also delivered essential food supplies:
- 100 kg of rice and 100 kg of maize flour – the foundation of daily meals for months to come
- 65 kg of beans – vital protein for developing bodies and minds
- 50 kg of sugar and 50 kg of flour – ensuring variety and proper nutrition
- 20 liters of cooking oil – making nutritious meals possible
- Fresh bread – immediate relief for hungry children
- Salt and seasonings – because dignity means more than just survival; it means enjoying your food
Dignity Matters
We also provided sanitary pads for the young girls, because no child should miss school due to lack of basic hygiene products. Additionally, washing detergents ensure the children can maintain cleanliness and self-respect—fundamental needs that are often overlooked.

Our donation of scholastic materials means that children who once shared torn textbooks or wrote on scraps of paper now have the tools they need to succeed. Pencils, notebooks, and learning materials aren’t luxuries—they’re investments in human potential.
