We work through long-term, on-the-ground partnerships — not short-term donations sent from a distance, but sustained relationships built on responsibility, trust and the belief that every child deserves more than survival. They deserve a life.

Likoni AIDS Orphanage Centre

Barn och Kvinnor Organisation has formed a committed, long-term partnership with the Likoni AIDS Orphanage Centre in Mombasa, Kenya — a home for approximately 45 children who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS.

The children at Likoni have experienced losses most of us will never understand. They have lost parents. In many cases, they have lost their own health. Some arrived at the centre having been found abandoned — left at roadsides, outside homes, in places where no child should ever be. They came with nothing. We are here to make sure they do not stay that way.

Location : Mombasa, Kenya

What These Children Face

Orphaned by AIDS

Most children at Likoni have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS. Kenya’s coastal region remains one of the most severely affected areas in the country. These children carry grief alongside everything else they face.

Some children were found abandoned — left at roadsides or outside homes by families unable to care for them. They arrived unnamed, unknown, and dependent entirely on the people who chose to take them in.

A number of children at the centre are themselves HIV-positive. Without consistent medical care from the earliest possible age, their chances of survival are dramatically reduced.

There is no state system that will step in. The centre and its partners — including us — are often the only thing standing between these children and a life with no support at all.

“They Were Sleeping on the Floor. We Changed That.”

When our team visited the Likoni AIDS Orphanage Centre, we discovered something that stopped us in our tracks. Approximately 45 children — many of them HIV-positive, all of them already carrying more than any child should — had no beds. No mattresses. No bedsheets. No blankets. They slept on bare floors, night after night.

We did not send a report. We acted.

The Beds Project. Barn och Kvinnor Organisation mobilised donors in Sweden and procured 40 beds, mattresses, bedsheets and blankets for the children at Likoni. For the first time, every child had a bed to sleep in. A mattress beneath them. A blanket when it was cold. What sounds ordinary to most people was, for these children, entirely new.

School Fees. A bed is a start. An education is a future. We cover school fees for the children at Likoni, ensuring that their circumstances do not become a ceiling on their potential. Every child who walks through a school gate is a child building a life beyond the orphanage.
Solar Lights. Last year, we provided solar lighting for the centre. Children who previously had no light after dark — no ability to read, study or simply feel safe at night — now have reliable, clean, renewable light. This project directly aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, as well as SDG 4: Quality Education, because education cannot happen in the dark.

What we provide

Our Regular Support to Likoni

We provide the essentials that every child needs and that the centre cannot always source
independently. Our support is regular, targeted and based on what the children actually need on the
ground.

Aligned with the un sustainable development goals.

Global Goals, Local Action

Every project we deliver at Likoni connects directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This is not coincidental — it is intentional.
We believe that local action and global responsibility are the same thing.

SDG 1 NO POVERTY

By covering school fees and providing essential supplies, we reduce the material deprivation facing 45 children who have no family financial support.

SDG 3 GOOD HEALTH & WELL-BEING

We fund medical supplies, HIV medication support and nutritious food — directly improving the health outcomes of HIV-positive children at the centre.

SDG 4 QUALITY EDUCATION

We pay school fees and provide school materials. Our solar lighting project means children can study after dark. Education is non-negotiable.

SDG 7 AFFORDABLE & CLEAN ENERGY

Our solar lights installation gave the centre clean, renewable energy — replacing darkness and reducing dependence on costly alternatives.

SDG 10 REDUCED INEQUALITIES

Children orphaned by AIDS, abandoned at birth and living without family support are among the world's most marginalised. Our work directly addresses their exclusion.

SDG 17 PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS

Our Sweden–Kenya partnership demonstrates that cross-border collaboration between civil society organisations drives real, measurable change on the ground.

Sustainability

Built to Last

Short-term donations can change a moment. Long-term commitment changes a life. Barn och Kvinnor Organisation is not a one-time donor — we are a sustained partner. Our support to Likoni is built on three pillars that ensure the children benefit not just today, but year after year.

Pillar 1 — Ongoing Funding

We maintain regular financial commitments covering school fees, medical supplies, food and essential materials — not as a one-off, but as a reliable annual commitment the centre can plan around.

Beds, mattresses, solar lights — investments in the physical environment of the centre that serve the children for years. We prioritise durability and lasting impact.

By paying school fees we invest in the children's futures beyond the orphanage — equipping them with education and opportunity so they can build independent, dignified lives.

Join Us

We Cannot Do This Without You.

The need at Likoni is real and it is ongoing. We are asking individuals, families, companies and organisations to join us — because the more support we have, the more children we can reach.

Donate

Financial contributions go directly to purchasing supplies for the children. No administration fees. No detours. Straight to Likoni.

Companies and organisations can support us through regular sponsorship, matched giving or donations in kind. We welcome every conversation.

Rally your school, workplace or community to collect clothing, books or hygiene products for direct shipment to the children in Mombasa.

Share our work. Talk about these children. The more people who know, the more children we can reach. Your voice matters.

"A child found at the roadside has the same right to a future as any other child in the world.

We are here to make sure that right is honoured."
