The Problem

Gender inequality persists as a pervasive issue for women and girls worldwide. It starts from the very beginning of their lives and persists throughout their entire existence.

Despite significant progress made in recent times, women and girls in Uganda and in Kenya from socioeconomic backgrounds continue to encounter numerous forms of unjust treatments. These include discrimination, harassment, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. Additionally, certain countries or cultural settings witness specific types of mistreatment such as forced marriages, honor killings, limited educational opportunities, denial of land and property rights, and restricted access to employment and healthcare.

Violence against women is driven by gender inequality, which includes unequal power dynamics between women and men, rigid gender roles, societal norms, and the lower status ascribed to women. Promoting and achieving gender equality is essential for preventing violence against women.

Significant Predictor

There is compelling evidence that gender is the most significant predictor of poverty.

Root Cause

This discrimination occurs because of the belief that women are inherently inferior to men due to their gender and therefore should not be treated equally. Recognizing these links, the 2000 Millennium Development Goals acknowledge gender equality as a prerequisite for eradicating poverty and promoting development. Governments agreed in the MDGs “to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women as effective ways to combat poverty, hunger, and disease, and to stimulate development that is truly sustainable.”

Solution

Barn och Kvinnor Organisation focuses on advocating for rights and promoting gender equality through legal advocacy. Our organization is committed to empowering vulnerable women and children by providing free legal awareness, offering probing legal support, and championing gender equality and human rights. Through our efforts, we strive to create a more just and equitable society where everyone has access to justice and equal opportunities.

Barn och Kvinnor Organisation is dedicated to championing gender equality and human rights by empowering vulnerable women and children with free legal awareness and offering robust legal support. Through our initiatives, we aim to provide a safe space for women and children to access justice, challenge discrimination, and advocate for their rights. By prioritizing gender equality in our approach, we strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive.

Our Free Legal Services

The organization also provides legal assistance to victims of domestic violence and abuse, helping them navigate the legal system to obtain protection orders and seek justice. By advocating for stronger legal protections and working with law enforcement, Barn Och Kvinnor Organisation strives to create a safer environment for women and children.

Barn Och Kvinnor Organisation offers professional counseling services to help victims heal from the trauma of abuse. This includes individual therapy, group counseling sessions, and support groups where survivors can share their experiences and receive emotional support. These services are essential for both boys and girls, ensuring that all youth have the opportunity to recover from trauma and pursue their educational goals in a supportive environment. By addressing the emotional and psychological needs of both genders, the organization helps to create a more balanced and inclusive approach to overcoming barriers to education and personal development.
In addition to direct support services, Barn Och Kvinnor Organisation runs community awareness and prevention programs aimed at educating the public about the signs of domestic violence and abuse, and the importance of gender equality. These programs engage both men and women in conversations about respectful relationships, and they work to dismantle the cultural norms that perpetuate violence and discrimination. We also actively educate both girls and boys on gender equity: Through our mentoring programs, we actively foster a culture of gender equality by fostering mutual respect and empathy among genders. We directly confront the gender dynamics that contribute to inequality by providing interactive lessons for boys and girls. These lessons focus on addressing gender bias in various settings such as homes, schools, communities and work. Additionally, we teach them how to cultivate healthy relationships and avoid unhealthy ones. We also emphasize the significance of consent, prevention of sexual harassment, and reproductive health, including methods to prevent teen pregnancy

Recognizing that financial dependency can trap individuals in abusive situations, Barn Och Kvinnor Organisation offers economic empowerment programs. These programs include vocational training, financial literacy education, and small business support, enabling women and youth to achieve financial independence and build a more secure future

The organisation advocates for policy changes at local and national levels to protect the rights
of women and children and to ensure stricter enforcement of laws against domestic violence.
This includes lobbying for better resources for victims and stronger penalties for perpetrators.

Specialized services are provided for children who have witnessed or experienced abuse. These include trauma-informed counseling, educational support, and safe recreational activities. The aim is to ensure that children recover from their experiences and continue their development in a nurturing environment.
The organisation offers long-term support plans that include ongoing counseling, mentorship programs, and follow-up services. This ensures that survivors continue to receive the help they need to maintain their independence and well-being. By addressing domestic violence and abuse through these comprehensive strategies, Barn Och Kvinnor Organisation aims to provide a lifeline to victims and work towards ending the cycle of violence in the communities it serves.
By integrating these comprehensive services, Barn Och Kvinnor Organisation works holistically to address the root causes and consequences of domestic violence and abuse, empowering women and children to break free from the cycle of violence and build healthier, more hopeful lives.
