The Problem
Gender inequality persists as a pervasive issue for women and girls worldwide. It starts from the very beginning of their lives and persists throughout their entire existence.
Despite significant progress made in recent times, women and girls in Uganda and in Kenya from socioeconomic backgrounds continue to encounter numerous forms of unjust treatments. These include discrimination, harassment, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. Additionally, certain countries or cultural settings witness specific types of mistreatment such as forced marriages, honor killings, limited educational opportunities, denial of land and property rights, and restricted access to employment and healthcare.
Violence against women is driven by gender inequality, which includes unequal power dynamics between women and men, rigid gender roles, societal norms, and the lower status ascribed to women. Promoting and achieving gender equality is essential for preventing violence against women.
Significant Predictor
There is compelling evidence that gender is the most significant predictor of poverty.Root Cause
This discrimination occurs because of the belief that women are inherently inferior to men due to their gender and therefore should not be treated equally. Recognizing these links, the 2000 Millennium Development Goals acknowledge gender equality as a prerequisite for eradicating poverty and promoting development. Governments agreed in the MDGs “to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women as effective ways to combat poverty, hunger, and disease, and to stimulate development that is truly sustainable.”Solution
