Special Issue: Launching Our Special Needs Children Project 2025
Breaking barriers, building hope – Supporting children with special needs in Kakunyu and Bakka communities
NEW PROJECT LAUNCH: A Ray of Hope for Special Needs Children
We are excited to announce the official launch of our groundbreaking Special Needs Children Project 2025 – a comprehensive initiative dedicated to supporting children with disabilities in the rural communities of Kakunyu and Bakka, Wakiso District, Uganda.
This new project represents Barn Och Kvinnor Organisation’s commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of their physical or developmental challenges, receives the dignity, care, and opportunities they deserve.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS: Community Assessment and Discovery
Background Research Reveals Critical Needs
Our journey began with an extensive background assessment conducted by our dedicated team to identify and understand the specific needs of children with special needs in the target villages. This crucial groundwork was made possible through collaboration with local leadership who opened doors and hearts in their communities.
Community Partners Who Made It Possible:
- 2 Local Chairmen who provided invaluable guidance and community access
- 2 Local Councillors who facilitated meetings and helped identify families in need
Through this comprehensive assessment, we discovered heartbreaking realities that demanded immediate action. The research revealed that children with special needs in these communities face multiple barriers to a dignified life, lacking even the most basic equipment and support systems necessary for their daily care and development.
What We Found: A Call for Urgent Action
The assessment uncovered severe gaps in essential resources:
- Complete absence of specialized equipment like gymnastic mats for physical therapy
- Critical shortage of basic necessities including diapers for incontinent children
- Limited access to nutritious food appropriate for their dietary needs
- Social isolation stemming from community stigma and lack of understanding
BREAKING THE SILENCE: Addressing Social Stigma and Exclusion
The Hidden Crisis of Social Shame
One of the most devastating discoveries during our assessment was the deep-rooted social stigma surrounding children with special needs. In many cases, these precious children are tragically considered a source of shame to their families and communities.
The Reality We’re Fighting:
- Children with disabilities are often hidden from public view
- Most do not attend school, missing crucial educational opportunities
- Families struggle in isolation without community support
- Traditional beliefs and misconceptions fuel discrimination
- Limited awareness about disability rights and inclusion
Our Mission: Integration and Inclusion
Central to our project is the urgent need for integration and inclusion of children with special needs into their communities. We believe that every child deserves:
- Equal opportunities for education and social participation
- Community acceptance and understanding
- Family support without shame or stigma
- Access to services that promote independence and dignity
We are committed to changing hearts and minds, one family and one community at a time.
