Introduction
On 14th March 2026, Barn Och Kvinnor Uganda carried out a transformative community outreach in Mende and Kakunyu, Wakiso District, reaching 30 children with special needs and their caregivers through a comprehensive and compassionate intervention. This initiative was part of the project “Improved Living Conditions for Children with Special Needs”, aimed at enhancing health, dignity, and comfort for children living in extremely challenging conditions.
A prior needs assessment (January 2026) revealed severe vulnerabilities: children sleeping on bare floors, exposing them to cold and infections, extreme household poverty, which limited their ability to provide basic needs, lack of physiotherapy services, and caregivers experiencing emotional distress and isolation. Children living with cerebral palsy, autism, hearing impairments, and hydrocephalus were highly neglected and vulnerable.
This outreach directly responded to these urgent needs
Our Approach:
Program Highlight:
The outreach adopted a targeted, community-based, and participatory approach, including:
- Community engagement and mobilization through local leaders and VHT mobilisers
- Beneficiary identification and verification based on vulnerability and need
- Centralized outreach session at Mende Subcounty Headquarters
- Integrated service delivery, combining material support, Physiotherapy skills transfer, and psychosocial care.
- Collaboration with local leadership (LC1) and volunteers to ensure transparency and coordination.
The session was structured to address both immediate needs and long-term caregiving capacity.

- Psychosocial care
The program created a more sustainable and dignified support system for children and their families.
Caregivers reported:
- Improved confidence in caring for their children
- Early signs of improved mobility among some children
- Reduced distress symptoms and increased comfort
Some caregivers even reported early improvements in mobility and reduced distress among children, highlighting the value of combining material support with skills and care.
Lessons Learned
While the outreach was impactful, it also highlighted important areas for growth:
- Establishment of a physical office for better community presence
- Integration of safeguarding measures, including consent procedures
- Better logistical planning, especially for transporting bulky items
- Stronger stakeholder coordination and early engagement if stake holders
- Enhanced logistical planning for vulnerable beneficiaries
Barn Och Kvinnor organization is committed to using these insights to scale and strengthen future interventions.
