Quality Education

Dedicated to promoting inclusive and equitable quality education for orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya and in Uganda.

Barn Och Kvinnor Organisation is dedicated to improving access to high-quality education for vulnerable children, with a particular focus on orphans & particularly girls in vulnerable communities.

Together we can shape minds and change lives through skilful and quality education.

The Problem

Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in sub-Saharan Africa face unique educational challenges, making their schooling experiences especially relevant to the seven Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4 themes of inclusion, education quality, and child well-being. In sub-Saharan Africa, transformational changes are beginning to make the idea of quality education for all a possibility, with the increase in access to education that began in the 1990s being extended to more children. This access is crucial for OVC, who already face severe economic disadvantages and have more struggles in completing school. Little is known, however, about how high-quality education can support the hope of the numerous OVC in sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, the AIDS pandemic, civil war, and economic instability in Uganda and Kenya have orphaned a generation, depriving them of education. Persistent economic challenges and high dropout rates in marginalized areas highlight the need for ongoing support.

Solution

We prioritize the empowerment of orphans and vulnerable children in our projects and create a nurturing atmosphere for them within communities and educational settings. Our Organisation assists vulnerable children in honing their academic abilities while fostering leadership and life skills, ultimately bolstering their confidence and amplifying their voices. At the community level, we collaborate with local orphanages, local organisations and local churches to challenge detrimental gender norms and social patterns impacting education outcomes, fostering greater support for children’s ’ education and active involvement in school. Additionally, we partner with local schools to enhance teaching quality, fortify supervisory capabilities, and establish inclusive policies with a focus on gender equality and transformation.

Who Faces Challenges?

Vulnerable children, orphans and marginalized groups struggle the most to access education in both Uganda and Kenya.
